So what is IRC you ask?
IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. It's a rather old form of online chat rooms that still gets used today worldwide. In the gaming community, many PC gamers use IRC to keep up with leagues, join in on shout casts, talk with their friends, get info for their clans and join pickups. IRC offers a wide variety of Servers for people to idle in, such as ETG(Enter the Game), Gamesurge and Quakenet. Here at Pwned.com, we've chosen Gamesurge as our residence. Already a idling and member of Gamesurge? Join us at #pwned.com


So how do I get IRC?
IRC is offered through a wide variety of clients, ranging in structure, setup, accessibility and OS. For a complete list of IRC clients, check out this link.

I'll be using mIRC for this tutorial,  which is also the client I use.


STEP 1.  DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL AN IRC CLIENT

Once you've downloaded and installed the client, open it up! Time to mess with the settings a bit. :3
See above for a list of clients. The below client, and client I use is mIRC.




Step 2. Register with Gamesurge

While it's not entirely necessary for you to do this, it makes it a hell of a lot easier for you to run your irc client, use commands, get ops and voice (more on that later) and mask your ip (keeps the stalkers and trolls at bay, trust me).

To register, simply visit this link. Pick a SN and it will email you a password and other info.



!! IMPORTANT !!
Getting your SN does not guarantee you your name on IRC. People change their name often, so if you must, try a different spelling, add some symbolsbefore or after your name ( i.e.  Clov3r`,  _clov3r, clov3r-  etc..)

Step 3. Open MIRC. Join Gamesurge Server.


The first time is always the scariest, I know. But don't worry, we'll be gentle!




Ignore the little box that opens up. that's just mIRC wanting your money. Just click Continue and move on.

Once you get past this little bump, you should see a nice box about the same size asking for some info and to connect.
Before we connect, Let's make sure we have Gamesurge selected as our server. IRC will save your settings, so next time you join you won't have to select the server again.

Connect > Servers > GameSurge > Random Server (EU if you're in Europe)
Next, go back up to Connect and fill out the info. Below is my actual info. Notice I have an alternative name. This is used for times when I might time out or someone else might of joined with my name.





Now you're ready, time to click that CONNECT BUTTON!! :D








STEP 4. Join #Pwned.com
to join, simple type in /j #pwned.com in the little address bar down near the bottom.

To join on connect, you can add Pwned.com to favorites and click JOIN ON CONNECT. This will make sure you join every time.

common commands you should know:
/ME highlights your name and rest of the line you type.
/NICK changes your name in IRC
/J to join a channel. Don't forget the "#" before the channel name ( I.E. #Pwned.com )
