Metal Gear Solid: The better bosses.
January 2, 2009 at 6:18 pm

I love the Metal Gear Solid games, my favourite game series :D The storyline of the series is one of the main selling points, that and I like stealth/action games. Plus the bosses are awesome/badass, a lot of them seem to be superhuman. The better ones: (In my veiw anyway.)

#5 Vulcan Raven - Vulcan Raven is one of the more awesome bosses, he carries an M61 Vulcan minigun, which is a weapon usually mounted on fightwer jets. Here is a pic of one:

Badass isn't it? Anyway the weight of the M61 Vulcan is about 200lbs without the ammunition feed system or the ammunition itself. And Vulcan Raven can carry the gun, a huge ammo drum, a powerful battery, AND a massive amount of ammunition. I couldn't find an in-game pic but here's this:

In addition you fight him in a freezer, in an underground base, in Alaska, this guy is tough badass. I still can't see how this guy could even be a concept, but anyway he is definately one of the better bosses. Vulcan Raven is superhuman, no doubt about it.

#4 Psycho Mantis - He is definately one of the top bosses, in the fight with mantis if you're not paying attention you might think your game is messed up. He will read your memory card (Bastard), he will read your mind (You can't quite hit him unless you know what to do.), he will turn invisible, he will telekinetically throw stuff at you, he will make your ally try to kiil herself, basically he's annoying and a top boss. Psycho Mantis:

#3 Liquid Snake - The twin of Solid Snake with a brittish accent, he is obsessed with becoming the next Big Boss. He is one tough bass turd (<- Funnier that way), first he tries to kiil you with a russian attack chopper, then he tries to kill you with a giant robot (Metal Gear REX), then he challenges you to a fight on top of the destroyed Netal Gear, he loses and falls off (Quite a fall too), but oooh no he couldn't just stay dead, he comes back driving a Jeep and an assault rifle, this guy just won't give up! Definately deserves #3 top boss.

#2 Vamp - This guy seems like a vampire, ahe can walk (well actually run) on water, run up vertical walls, and even keep you from moving with only a knife! In addition he has died about 5 times, he killed Otacons sister (The BASSTURD!!), he tries to kill Raiden and Snake, he just keeps coming back for more. MGS4 was the best game in the series for many reasons, but the fact that Vamp dies is one of the bigger ones. Vamp:

Before the #1 boss is announced I would like to point out the ones that came close to the top 5:

#6 The End - Coming in at 6th place The End was a boss fight better than that with Sniper Wolf, his use of camouflage was what made this fight a challenge, well that and the fact that he didn't kill you, just lowered your stamina and if it ran out you had to escape from Granin's reasearch facility and fight The End again... Anyway The End took a true, dedicated sniper and someone who knew how to be truly stealthy, and he was one of the best bosses to beat non-lethally due to the fact that you got his Mosin-Nagant (That shoots tranquilizers :D ) which made a no kill run that much easier.

#7 Sniper Wolf - Whilst falling short of The End, she is still one of the better bosses. An excellent sniper who, like The End, uses camouflage and has excellent sniping skills. Otacon has a bit of a crush on her, and it's almost sad when you have to kill her, but you do what you gotta do to beat the game.

#8 Screaming Mantis - When Psycho Mantis died, apparently he just found another body to live on with, one of the B&B Corps and uses a lot of Psycho Mantis' old tricks (Due to the fact that it is Psycho Mantis controlling her), I found it to be an interesting fight, but DO NOT use vibration mode with your comtroller, use SIXAXIS mode, Mantis' old tricks don't work with the new hardware as well as he would've hoped.

#9 The Fury - When you combine darkness, fire, and a crazy guy with a jetpack you know you're in trouble. I found this to be a little frustrating because of: 1. It's dark. 2. He carries one badass flamethrower. 3. N.V.G.s light up the area, but not The Fury (The one thing you really need to see), and Thermal Goggles light up The Fury well, but don't really provide much light.

#10 The Ladder - More of a joke than a boss, the ladder in MGS3 was just annoying, sure you could hear Cynthis Harrel's voice singing Sanke Eater, but my stamina dropped soooo quickly, and it took forever to climb that thing. [Notice] DO NOT JUMP OFF to see how long it takes to hit the ground! I tried that for the awesomeness I thought would come from hitting the floor, I had to climb the thing AGAIN and I didn't even get a reward! A new camo would've been nice, but noooooo I have to use my precious food items to restore the stamina I wasted climbing that DAMN LADDER!!! I HATE LADDERS!

And now....

The moment you've been reading for...

The #1 MGS series boss is...

The Boss - She carries a Patriot, she's an expert with CQC, she wears a sneaking suit, she's the woman behind Big Boss, what more do you need for qualification as the best MGS series boss? I did find the fight with her a bit frustrating (Damn time limit), until I found a good way to beat her, but she's still the best boss in my opinion (Not because of the name, and no pun intended.) During the fight Snake Eater plays (Great song), she's tough, she can destroy your gun and scatter it everywhere, and she can kick your ass with CQC. And in the end you learn everything behind the game, and she gives you her Patriot (Sweet). The best MGS series boss in my opinion.

I actually liked the battle with psycho mantis the most out of your list. The immersion in the game was so deep that it actually made you think he was using psychic powers. I actually thought it was cool that the game made you think a little bit more to defeat him, or look up some faqs on the internet...

To each his own opinion, Psych Mantis is cool, but I didn't see him as number one boss in the whole series. I did however see him as a good pick for number four boss.

Most of the good Boss Battles in the MG series weren't the stupid ones.. or you know crackpot over the top characters like some skank in a rubber suit (I bet someone loved the motion capture sequences)

Although I disagree with your number one choice. Big Boss in MG2:SS was the best... why no love for MG & MG2:SS?

First off, I have never played the originals, I hope to get MGS3 Subsistence so I can play the originals.

Kickback said at January 3, 2009 at 2:38 pm:

Ah man you need Subsistence to give them a go. MG isn't so great these days and feels dated, but even with it's 2D graphics and no voice acting MG2:SS feels just as personal and engrossing as the others. It's amazing what good storytelling can do.

Good news! (Kind of) I found a place to get them online for free, no viruses/spyware/crap! They should be free anyway, they came out in the 80's for the MSX computer. I plan to get them soon...

Kickback said at January 6, 2009 at 12:38 pm:

The MSX is a bitch to emulate and the text will be in japanese. Also your stuck with keyboard controls since Metal Gear doesnt have any Joystick support.

I played the original Jap versions on an MSX emulator... so I recommend MS3:Subsistence haha

Kee715 said at January 6, 2009 at 4:34 pm:

I got it, and it is in English, and it took me about ten minutes to figure out how to emulate it (It came with an emulator). I don't care about Joystick support as I do not have one, and the keybord works well enough. I still want MGS3: Subsistence though, it is excelent! I only played the first disk before because I rented it from Gamefly, I hope my mom gets it soon, but we already have MGS1 + VR Missions coming in the mail so that should be enough for about a week or so, then I will try the VR missions.

My english translated one on MSX2 is in so broken english its quite funny haha.

Kee715 said at January 7, 2009 at 3:30 pm:

Damn, these old games are hard, very hard... I found MGS1 easier and it is the hardest MGS game... And for some reason I can not save, did you have that problem?

Kickback said at January 8, 2009 at 2:58 am:

I've never figured out to save on the MSX versions, since the console runs on floppy disks i'll take a wild guess and say that you would use a formatted floppy disk as a separate save disk.. don't hold me to that though.

Subsistence you can just save in the pause menu, on the original MG MSX games i'm certain when you die you can save

Kee715 said at January 8, 2009 at 12:05 pm:

You hit F1 and then F5, that saves your game, but it freezes up whenever I try to do so...
