How To Lose Friends And Alienate People
Let me start this how I did for my review of Run Fat Boy Run. It is not the same kind of film as Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz. For those who think all Simon Pegg can do are films like those. Actually if I had to place it in a category like that, I would totally place it right there with Run Fat Boy Run. Now that that is out of the way, lets continue.
This is the story of guy wants to be awesome Celebrity Magazine Writer. Guy does some crazy stuff to get hired on to big name magazine. Guy falls in love with a Paris Hilton type celebrity and does what he can to get her into the sack only to realize later that his coworker is in love with him. Pretty basic story when you look at it that way.
This film had a load of celebrities that no one ever brought up in any of the build up to it, so it was kind of a surprise to see some people just pop up or named in the opening credits. Like I didn't know Gillian Anderson was in this film at all until I saw her name in the tail end of the opening credits. It seems more films are going the route of Tropic Thunder and not mentioning, "Oh yea, BTW we have Tom Cruiz in like a good portion of the film but we are not going to make that easy pubic knowledge." At least that is how it is seeming.
As far as the acting:
Simon Pegg - Everything he does seems to be brilliance. He has the range to go from over the top comedic actor to feeling overly sorry for him just by looking into his eyes. There were quite a few times all the females in the audience gave an "awe" when he was just looking at something and not even saying a thing. He is really good at showing emotion through his actions just as well as verbal. This job was no difference at all. Like I said, Brilliance.
Kirsten Dunst - Who ever was in charge of the makeup for this film deserves a fucking medal or something. They made her look insanely old in this film. Like crazy old. Especially for someone who is a year younger than myself. She looked well into her thirties. But that aside, she was fairly decent in this film as well. This might be what helped sell the "older" thing about her.
Megan Fox - I'm hoping it was an act, cause if it was, she did a perfect job in making me believe that she was the "Spoiled Little Whore" celebrity that she was portraying. Like to the point where she made Paris and Nichole look brilliant and interesting by comparison. She sold that way, I mean, WAY too well. Hopefully it was all an act, because if it is, then she is going to be huge when it comes to acting and not relying just on her looks to get her by.
Rating: 9/10
Totally check this out. It is a great date film as well as fun enough to go with some friends. But more a date film.
Side Rant
Sorry I couldn't resist. It has to be said though. And this is more aimed toward those of the female persuasion. Why is it that when you see a guy who is obviously depressed in a film you are overly sympathetic and feel bad for them, but when you see it in real life you treat guys quite the opposite. What is the deal with that. Like I said above, when it looked obvious that Sydney Young was depressed or let down, the women gave and audible "awe" and then made comments to each other or who they were with about how they feel bad and would do something to cheer them up. But I have seen the exact same thing happen in the real world and those guys are lucky to even get a look of "please don't talk to me." What is the deal with that? Honestly. Why the split on feeling for a fake character feeling bad and a real person feeling bad? What is the difference?
Sorry, just felt it had to be said or brought up.
