It's just recently been brought to my attention that Sexism DOES still exist today. I always knew it was kind of floating around, but I've never had an encounter with someone who was so intensely sexist...until last night. I anwersed the phone while I was working last night, went through the whole embarassing intro of "Hi this is Gamestop where we buy and sell used games my name is Taylor how may I help you?" There was a grunt from the other end of the line, and then the man spoke. "Could you go get a guy who knows something about games? I mean...you don't know anything about games, right?" Straight away, just becuase I was a girl, he automatically assumed that I couldn't help him. I assured the guy that I knew plenty about games. Next he said "Darksector." I asked him for what system, and he said "PS3". I automatically assumed that he wanted to know whether or not we had any in stock, so I asked him if he wanted a new or used copy. The man let out a long sigh and said "NO. I don't need one...jeez....I already HAVe one. I need to know why there's a black line on the top and bottom of my screen. Can I get rid of that? Is this for a widescreen?" I asked if he was playing on a widescreen, but APPARENTLY he had already told me that he was playing on a regular screen. I asked if he had changed any settings on the system or the tv, and to check the back of the box next to where it said HD,(who knows). Then he accused me of not knowing what I was talking about, saying that I sounded nervous, and he wanted to speak to one of the BOYS working. There was only one other guy working ,and he didn't know the answer, but I asked anyways and told the man that my coworker agreed with me. This guy then started going off on a tangent about how I don't know as much as a guy would, that if I worked there then why didn't I know the answer to the question, and that I sounded like I was nervouws and just didn't know what I was doing. I tried to tell him that I sounded nervous because he was shouting (even though it's really because I was angry). I said "Listen sir, I PLAY games." He rudely interuppted me and said "Maybe youv'ed played a game but you don't know anything about them. I bet you don't even work there, You're probably just hanging out with your boyfriend." THAT comment REALLY got to me. I was about to try to give this man a not so pleasant speech, when he goes "I'll just call TOMORROW so I can talk to one of the BOYS." and then hung up.
It just blows my mind that people still think and treat others that way. And in fact, today, I found out that this man was a regular customer. Now, I'm definitely not the best gamer in the world - I tend to suck it up at COD4 and Halo - but being a girl should not have an impact on my credibility or the spectrum of my knowledge. I don't want to be treated differently or held in a higher respect just because I'm a girl who likes video games. I would much rather be treated equally and not stand out because I'm a girl. It's just very unfortunate that there ARE people like this out in the world. It makes me literally sick =(
