Hancock
A hard-living superhero who has fallen out of favor with the public enters into a questionable relationship with the wife of the public relations professional who's trying to repair his image.
Unfortunately, I think this movie was way over hyped. For me, that kind of brought things down for me. Mainly cause I went in expecting something much larger than this was. Far be it that I say this was a horrible movie, but it wasn't as strong as it could have been. I'll explain below about what I mean. I have good and bad.
The Bad:
First, the music for this film was kind of lame. It felt like a hodgepodge of music that the directors and editors said, "Hey, this would be cool." Here's an example. They were trying to show Will Smith's character as a guy of the streets, so there was the stereotypical hip-hop/rap music playing. Not a bad choice. But then like half way through a scene that started out like that, they would switch it up to the "epic" super hero orchestrated music. It just didn't seem to help flow the movie from scene to scene.
Next, the film started off kind of slow. Mainly because they showed the intro to the movie in the trailers. Like 90% of the first 15 minutes was shown spliced into the trailers that was shown to the world. This is the time of the film where the film makers need to grab your attention so you sit for the other hour and a half, plus, of the movie. So it was hard to stay focuses when I had seen all of this for the last month and a half. Poor editing for the trailer in my opinion.
Also, during the intro, they tried to play up things between characters that seemed that we all should have known about. You know, things like the snarky remarks from movies like X-Men and Superman that fans would get. But since this isn't based on anything already in production, it just seemed like they were teasing something that wasn't there. It made it hard to care about the characters, or have any kind of meaning relationship with them.
The Good:
So after trudging through the intro that we have all seen, the film did start to pick up. Doing the math, the other 10% of the trailers were split amongst the other hour and 45, or so. So there was quite a bit of stuff that kind of came up and goosed ya. Saying, "Ha, bet you thought it was this way from the trailers." Like the big twist in the film. Once that came up, the whole movie shifted into a much better film. Mainly, because I didn't expect that from the trailers. And the concept is one of those things that I enjoy in a good movie.
The film also got a lot grittier than what was shown in the trailers. I won't say what they were, but I will say they do show limbs getting hacked off by Hancock. Something I was not expecting and was a great surprise. It's the little things like this that can make a movie much better for me. I'm twisted. I know. Wanna fight about it.
Finally, the humor in the film was also a bit better, after the stuff they already showed the audience for the last few months. Granted, I will say that they tried to put some of the best ones in the trailers, but like with most comedy movies, that is usually where it ends. There were a few other good scenes that you don't get to see before. Including a scene that was right out of the mind of Chairface Chippendale. Tick fans will see what I mean.
On a final note, there is something extra a little bit into the credits, but nothing after. So if you are one of those people that like to see if there is anything extra, like me, the only thing is a little bit into the credits rolling. So there ya have it.
