→You Don't Mess With the Zohan in Review←
I just came back from watching "You Don't Mess With the Zohan." Being an avid Adam Sandler fan and a die hard fan in the comedy genre, I had to go see this. The previews seemed hilarious, exciting and different, but after coming back from the theaters, it left nothing but a bitter taste in my mouth.
WARNING SPOILER ALERT!
Adam Sandler is wonderful actor full of spontaneous energy, which is why he played this character brilliantly. What I didn't like about this film is that it basically threw out random stuff that was supposed to be funny, and in turn, some scenes ended making me look over to see if anyone in the audience was laughing. There were scenes that were genuinely funny, that I actually laughed without forcing myself to because everyone else was. What dissapointed me about the film was that it wasn't consistent. It didn't seem very well put together. All in all, I got my hopes up too much and my mind crashed into a wall when I watched it.
Ok, so the whole storyline or plot we have here is that Mossad Zohan Dvir played by Adam Sandler is a super strong commander/agent who is in constant battle with the Palestinian terrorists in the Middle East. He fakes his death and runs away to the United States because he's sick of all the fighting to become a hairdresser. Many events happen and he eventually gets discovered by his former enemy. In the end, the moral of the story is everyone is the same no matter what part of the world you're from and that we should live peacefully....either that, or they can set aside differences to fight off their landowners.

The movie started out funny, and slowly got less funny until it just blew. Basically, if you're into stupid humor like having sex with old people then this might be your movie. I believe the writers tried too hard to be funny. A bit like, hey look at me, am I funny yet?! Many parts of the movie I found myself wincing and confused at the screen trying to figure out if it was supposed to make me laugh or just downright uncomfortable. For instance, do you find kicking cats like a hacky sack funny? Or maybe you find Sandler talking about his stiff penis to be funny? Many parts of this movie just took it way too far for my taste. I'm a very open person when it comes to comedy. But I can tell when you're trying too hard to push for laughs. Comedy should come naturally and shouldn't be forced. I feel that this movie was all about "let's see how many stupid situations we can fit in the screen so the audience doesn't notice that the last joke wasn't funny; Maybe this one will make them laugh?" Also, there were random celebrities inserted in the movie to make the audience think "oooh look it's [Insert celebrity name here]!" I believe the random celebrities took away from the movie rather than helping the story.
"You Don't Mess With the Zohan" wasn't all bad. There were parts where it was lol hilarious and the movie went by fast so you wouldn't have to sit there in a slow torturing death. Adam Sandler does a good job in portraying his strange, crazy, funny character that the audience can't help but to like. Most of the actors and actresses did a good job in capturing their role. I would rate this movie a C-. I'm being quite generous too, reason being the acting wasn't bad, there were parts that were funny, and the fact that I'm a Sandler fan. It's not the actors' and actresses' fault but I'm blaming the writers for making the movie awkward.
This is not one of Sandler's best works. So if you want to see it I suggest you to wait until it goes to the cheap budget theaters, or out on DVD which I believe won't take long. I hope Sandler makes an epic comedy soon, because it's been awhile since he has.
