I am a huge fan of games that focus on story as well as game play, and this game did just that. The overall story of the game was a little confusing at first, but then it gets so interesting that I was not able to put the controller down. But then again, I'm also a sucker for a story based on how twisted humanity can be. But enough on that, I don't want to start talking and give away some of the story.
The game play of this game has a few interesting aspects to it, as well as a few drawbacks. I'll break these up for you.
Positives:
The Parkour system that Ubisoft designed is extremely top notch. I honestly felt like I was controlling Jackie Chan at the height of his performance at quite a few points in the game. It was definitely cool to be escaping from enemies by jumping and swinging and hanging in a way that just look beautiful.
The combat system was also pretty fluid as well. You could also move between weapons with ease to make for some truly stunning combos and attacks. Nothing to the point of Heavenly Sword, but pretty damn close.
Also the addition of special assassination move adds to the awesomeness of the combat system. Nothing more fun then saying screw the sneaking and running down guards and shoving a knife into their neck after tackling them to the ground. Really cool.
Negatives:
On of the big flaws I found with this game is the fact that it got repetitive real fast. Not the overall game, but the parts you had to do to move the story along. As an assassin you had to do minor things to make sure you were getting the right person and the reasons and information needed to do so. So you had to run around an help other assassins and citizens to get this. There was no deviation to these little tasks, so it gets very repetitive very fast. At least until you move the story along to the next part. There could have been a bit more of variety to these. Even different dialogue could have helped this, btu alas.
While I do sing praises for the Parkour system, there were also times where it got very frustrating. Times when you want to fall off the building to escape or hop into a hiding spot, the character would stand or squat there like he was simple minded. It just seemed that there was no way to master the controls for this and it was very frustrating to get killed because he wouldn't go into hide mode.
The last thing I will touch on here is the "hiding" portion. This is more of a nit-pick for me here. Mainly, I don't see how someone running around with blood on their clothes can blend easily into a group of like dressed people and not bring attention. Just doesn't make sense to walk right by people who are looking for you while supposedly covered in blood and them not notice. Just me I guess.
In the end, I still recommend this game for any and all to play. The flaws are definitely worth the overall bonus of playing the game. The story and things they got down well make up for those flaws I mentioned. Totally give it a whirl.
