You really don't necessarily need Brood Wars...at least at the time you didn't. Now I'd recommend getting it because most people will be playing with the expansion, and hardly anybody would be in the original servers. Still just as good.

i love this game, play it all the time. can\'t wait for SC2 to come out, but blizzard is slow as hell so it\'s gonna be like another year.
StarCraft: BroodWar is a great expansion pack to the original StarCraft to get into the battle. It unlocks units, new maps, editor items, campaign levels and more. It is a recommended game for the Strategy players.
Definitely a great add-on to an already great game. For 15 bucks you can get the StarCraft battlechest which comes with both the original game and the expansion and strategy guides for both games from Prima. These are great games, and StarCraft 2 only promises to be even better.
