Some food for thought about why the ones you meet online are so much better looking than in person;

Some are surely boys masquerading as girls, or girls that weren't blessed with beauty masquerading as beautiful girls. I'm sure you've probably witnessed the unraveling of a person's false online persona before (we've seen it happen here at Pwned.com once already). It's sad, but they're out there.

Most of the female gamers that aren't 'stunners' won't post their pictures on the internet because many men online are extremely critical and judgmental of their appearances (this is in stark contrast with face to face meetings, where the same overly-critical and judgmental males online are often uncertain or lacking confidence when interacting with the opposite sex). Sometimes, this probably results in the previously mentioned situation where a girl pretends to be someone prettier than they are.

A lot of women probably shy away from revealing their passion for gaming in person, or visiting gaming venues like LAN centers, or even LAN parties, because it isn't yet considered a social norm, or because it garners too much attention. Personally, I won't LAN unless it's with a small group of friends. I just don't care for all the attention. Online it is tolerable, in person it becomes overbearing.
