The adventure began with the Hero receiving a call to action, a threat to the peace of the community. Announced to the Hero by another, acting as a "herald," the Hero gathered his gear, and prepared for peril. The herald, dark and terrifying and judged evil by the world, called the Hero to adventure simply by the crisis of his appearance. According to some, the Hero initially refused the call, straying away from an adventurer's life. As a punishment, the Hero suffered scorn, chastised for cowardice.

Whatever the case, the Hero answered, accepting the call. The Hero, thrust into the elements, encounters a protective figure who provided special tools and advice for the adventure ahead. This protector prepared the Hero for perilous paths, passing perception and passions. The Hero then came to cross the threshold between the world of familiarity and that which is not. This involved facing a mysterious guardian, an entity of enormous power, an entity whose sole work is to keep all within the confines of this world.

The Hero, unable to defeat the guardian, appeared defeated and dead. Rather than passing the threshold, the Hero passed into this brave new world by means of rebirth. The hero was transformed, becoming more powerful and ready for the adventure ahead.

Once past the threshold and reborn, the Hero encountered a dream landscape of ambiguous and fluid forms. The Hero was challenged with surviving a succession of obstacles and, in so doing, amplifying his consciousness. The Hero was helped covertly by some supernatural helper or may discover a benign power supporting this journey.

The Hero was quickly faced with the ultimate trial; a temptress of a woman. A queen-like figure. The Hero was distracted from his grand journey, pursuing this feminine figure to folly. The Hero became tainted by the flesh, lost in pursuit, much to the revulsion and rejection of this female figure.

The Hero, dazed and lost in his pursuit, comes face to face with the timeless tyrant and yet masterly merciful aspects and authority of the fatherly figure. In so doing, the Hero came to understand himself and the relationship with and as this figure. Humbled, the Hero's ego is disintegrated in a breakthrough expansion of consciousness. The Hero's idea of reality changed; the Hero found the ability to do new things and see a larger point of view.

The Hero is now ready to obtain that which was originally pursued. Items or awareness that, upon the Hero's return, will benefit the society that was has left. However, having found bliss and enlightenment in the other world, the Hero may not want to return to the ordinary world to bestow the boon onto fellow man.
